New BCSE Location!

Carrie & Brandon have been working hard this year to find the right spot for a permanent location for BCS Engineering. We have been leasing our current location for almost 8 years now and we were in need of finding a permanent home. After almost a year of searching and months of closing work, we have officially purchased 2,000 sq ft of office space on Richland Avenue! We are super excited for this opportunity. We will update clients when the move will take place. It will likely be in a few months, after we finish up preparations of the new space!

BCSE Represents at the 2015 Race for a Reason Triathlon!!

We’re so proud of BCSE’s own Carrie & Lynn for braving 40 degree temperatures, wind, & rain as they both completed the 2015 Race for a Reason here in Athens, OH!! Leisa, the Mom of our intern also participated in the race and provided us this great picture of these 3 amazing athletes. Of course Carrie’s youngest, Asher, completed the pic with a perfect photo bomb.

Not only did they train long hours, but they also raised money for their favorite non-profits. Thanks ladies for reminding us that hard work and success look great on everyone! For more information and results, please visit http://ohioraceforareason.com/.

30 Year Anniversary of .com

This past Sunday was the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in the history of the Internet – the registration of the first .com domain. It seems hard to imagine something as pervasive as the Internet has only been around for 30 years. While I am able to remember how things were before the World Wide Web became a constant part of my life, there are people younger than me who have lived their entire lives with it. As such, I am sure some people are unable to imagine life without the Internet.

This article from CBS News goes into a little more detail about the history of the dot com domain.

I also found the following timeline from Verisign (which is included in the CBS article) extremely interesting. For example, I didn’t know that Amazon has been around since 1994 – shortly after the advent of the World Wide Web. This timeline is full of similarly interesting facts.

What Color Is this Dress – The Importance of Quality Pictures on Your Website

So, it is likely that you have seen the following image making the rounds on the internet:

We discussed this briefly around the office and there were varying opinions. However, there is one thing that we took away as a lesson from all of this – the importance of quality pictures. If the lighting in your picture allows people to see your subject in different colors, then this is probably not an ideal picture. This can obviously be an issue for online retailers. As the only representation an online customer has of your product comes from whatever image is uploaded, it is crucial to get this right.

To this end, we would like to mention our Mobile Admin Module for X-Cart. Among other things, this module allows you to upload pictures from your phone or tablet for your X-Cart store. You will just want to make sure that your pictures are better than the one of the dress in this article.

If you are curious about the science behind why the dress is perceived in different colors, this Wired article helps explain the phenomenon.

Giving Thanks

We certainly have a lot to be thankful for around the BCS Engineering office. However, we are particularly thankful for the extremely tasty treats that we recently received in the mail from our friends over at Big Red SEO. It is hard to tell which of the Noshsense bars were the favorite, but they were definitely a big hit around the office! Thanks to Kimberly and Conor Treacy of Big Red SEO for this wonderful 12th Anniversary (and birthday) gift!

Happy 12th Anniversary….to Us!

Our business started in 2002 with a couch and a laptop…..well, and a baby and a new Mom. Our founder, Carrie Saunders, was at home with a new baby and missing her technology work at Ohio University. She decided to approach her favorite local kid’s store to see if she could help them expand their business online. After Carrie got her feet wet with that first customer, she discovered a niche that wasn’t being served. Because of this, she focused on learning everything she could about the X-Cart shopping cart platform.

Before long, business was booming in the basement of her house with 3 other full-time employees. About that time, her husband Brandon Saunders decided to leave his network engineering job and join the business as a Partner. When Brandon joined full-time, he was able to round out our service offerings to include hosting and a variety of network engineering and IT-related offerings.

Flash forward to present day – we are still working to help businesses increase their sales through a variety of e-commerce solutions that we support and customize to meet our customers’ needs! Now, instead of a new Mom and a laptop on a couch in the basement, we are an office of 12 people with a worldwide client base. What is really cool is as we’ve grown, we’ve kept our family focus and really think of our clients as friends that we are helping out along their way. Our goal is to always provide a top-quality product with the best customer service available.

Contact us for a quote to help you with your X-Cart, Magento, or BigCommerce shopping cart. From hosting to SEO to app & program development, chances are that we have seen your request before. Because of this, we have experience implementing and supporting the solution that is best for you!

In celebration of our 12th anniversary, we are also offering 12% off of all BCSE mods on our site! Take advantage of this offer while it lasts!

Triathlon Success!!!

Saturday was a great day for a Triathlon and our Triathletes Carrie & Lynn both had a super day! Carrie posted her fastest swim time ever and finished in 02:09:18.970! Lynn’s goal was to finish in under 2 hours and she blew that out of the water with a finish time of 01:54:54.527! We couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishments!!

Carrie waving on her way back from the bike and heading to the run area!

Brandon of BCSE also participated in the Race for a reason and decided at the last minute to do the Mud Run! He finished with a time of 00:55:09! The Mud Run is a 4.5. mile run that goes through the ROTC challenge course and finishes at a slip-in-slide.

Over 1,000 people participated in the Race for a Reason Tri/Du, 5K, Mud Run, and 3K Walk and over $100,000 was raised for 87 different causes; 244 of those participants braved the Tri/Du. What a fantastic day full of personal achievements topped off with the great feeling of knowing that many worthy charities benefited from all of these efforts!

Carrie & Lynn post race, those smiles tell it all!
