Black Friday can be one of the biggest sales opportunities of the year for an e-commerce business. But it’s also one of the worst times to discover that your website isn’t prepared for the traffic.
Several years ago, one of our clients learned that lesson the hard way. Their website crashed on Black Friday morning, right when they needed it to be performing at its best. They lost sales they could never recover, and the frustrating part was that the warning signs had been there for weeks.
The good news is that you don’t have to wait until Black Friday to find out whether your site can handle the pressure.
Here are five areas you should be checking now.

1. Test Your Site’s Traffic Capacity
The first question isn’t simply whether you’re expecting a lot of traffic on Black Friday.
The question is:
Has your server actually experienced the kind of traffic you’re expecting?
Your website may have handled last year’s traffic just fine, but your business may look very different this year. You’ve probably added products, grown your audience, installed new software, changed functionality, or added integrations.
All of those changes can affect how your site performs under pressure.
Load Testing Isn’t the Same as Checking Your Site
Load testing means simulating real traffic spikes.
You’re not testing your site under the conditions of an average Tuesday. You’re testing what happens when a massive number of people are trying to use your website at the same time.
For larger sites, we start stress testing six to eight weeks before a major sale. That gives us time to identify problems and fix them before the sale arrives.
We had one client go from a complete Black Friday crash one year to a completely smooth Black Friday the following year.
The difference?
We tested and prepared the site ahead of time.
Your hosting configuration, server limits, and caching layers all need to be tested under pressure, not simply checked off a list.
2. Test Your Entire E-Commerce System, Not Just Your Website
Traffic is only part of the equation.
Your website can stay online and still lose revenue if something behind the scenes stops working.
Think about all the systems involved in a typical purchase:
- Payment processing
- Inventory management
- Shipping calculations
- Third-party integrations
- Customer and order data
- Checkout functionality
Each of these is a potential dependency.
And something that works perfectly on a quiet Wednesday may behave very differently when hundreds or thousands of customers are using your site at once.
Don’t Rely on a Simple Page Speed Test
A page speed test can tell you useful information, but it doesn’t tell you whether your entire checkout process will work under a massive traffic spike.
We test the full transaction cycle.
That means simulating real users browsing the site, adding products to their carts, and checking out simultaneously.
This helps us find problems that a simple page speed test won’t reveal.
Because if one integration fails and takes down your checkout, you’re not just losing one transaction.
You’re potentially losing every customer who encounters that problem and decides not to come back.
3. Check Your Security Before the Sale
Black Friday brings more traffic, but that also means your website can become a bigger target for bad actors.
And security problems don’t always announce themselves.
Outdated plugins, outdated integrations, and unpatched systems can create vulnerabilities, especially when those systems connect directly to your e-commerce platform.
For platforms such as Magento, WooCommerce, and X-Cart, the plugin and integration ecosystem can create additional areas that need to be monitored.
Don’t Wait for a Security Problem
We recommend vulnerability scanning throughout the year, with additional attention given about a month to a few weeks before a major sale.
You also want to make sure your PCI compliance is current, particularly if you’ve changed payment processes, added new checkout functionality, or made significant changes to your checkout during the past year.
A security breach during your busiest sales period can do more than interrupt sales.
It can damage customer trust.
And customer trust can take years to rebuild.
Security needs to be an ongoing responsibility, not something you check once a year.
4. Test Your Mobile Checkout on Real Devices
Most e-commerce teams know they need to test their websites on mobile.
But there’s a big difference between looking at your website on your phone and actually testing the complete purchase experience across different devices.
Mobile traffic can account for more than 60% of traffic for many e-commerce stores during Black Friday. That means mobile checkout problems can have a significant impact on your sales.
And sometimes it’s the smallest things that create friction.
An extra tap.
A field that doesn’t autofill correctly.
A button that’s difficult to press.
A payment method that doesn’t display properly.
A slow-loading page.
Each one creates another opportunity for a potential customer to abandon the purchase.
Test More Than a Browser Resize
Don’t just resize your browser window and assume your mobile experience works.
Test the actual purchase flow across different devices, including iOS and Android and multiple screen sizes.
Pay particular attention to:
- Autofill behavior
- Payment method display
- Page load times on mobile data
- Button and form usability
- The complete checkout process
And don’t test only on Wi-Fi.
Your customers may be shopping from their phones using cellular data, and their experience can be very different.
5. Have a Plan for When Something Goes Wrong
Even if you’ve done everything right, there’s still one question you need to answer:
What happens if something fails?
Every website has a failure threshold.
You may not find every possible failure point during testing, even when you’ve tested thoroughly. The goal is to find as many problems as possible before the sale and have a plan for the ones you don’t.
Know Who Gets the Alert
Before Black Friday, make sure you have monitoring, automated alerts, and a response plan in place.
Your monitoring should look for warning signs before the website actually crashes.
For example, you can monitor things like:
- Load times
- Server memory
- Overall server performance
- Site availability
Sometimes these signals can give you a warning that something is going wrong before customers experience the problem.
And if something does go wrong, you need to know exactly what happens next.
Who receives the alert?
Who gets called?
Who is responsible for fixing the problem?
What are the first three steps?
The first 15 minutes after a failure can make a significant difference in how long the problem lasts. Having a plan helps your team respond quickly instead of trying to figure everything out while the website is down.
Don’t Wait Until Black Friday Week
The five areas we’ve covered are:
- Traffic capacity
- Integrations
- Security
- Mobile experience
- Your failure and response plan
These shouldn’t be a checklist you pull out the week before Black Friday.
They should be part of your preparation window now.
The earlier you identify a problem, the more time you have to fix it without the pressure of your biggest sales event hanging over your team.
Trying to fix problems under pressure costs more in every direction.
Your Black Friday Preparation Starts Before Black Friday
Your e-commerce website doesn’t have to be perfect.
But you do need to know where its weak points are.
Test your traffic capacity. Test your integrations. Check your security. Test the mobile checkout on real devices. And make sure you have monitoring and a response plan in place if something does go wrong.
Because the goal isn’t simply to hope your website survives Black Friday.
The goal is to know that you’ve prepared it for the traffic you’re expecting.
And it’s much better to discover a problem during a controlled test than when thousands of customers are trying to check out.
